ADS127L01 ADC: 7 Checks for Filter Timing and Valid Data Frames

Plan ADS127L01 acquisition with bounded differential inputs, reference drive, filter latency, signed decoding and the correct optional status format. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Define bandwidth before choosing the operating mode

ADS127L01 is a wideband 24-bit delta-sigma ADC, with headline performance dependent on its operating mode, clock and digital filter. Decide the signal bandwidth, required update rate and acceptable latency before selecting settings. High-resolution, low-power and very-low-power modes are not interchangeable labels for identical performance. Save the applicable source tables with the configuration. A 24-bit output word describes coding resolution; it does not establish 24 noise-free bits or a universal measurement accuracy. Manufacturer documentation.

2. Bound both differential and individual input voltages

Write down the expected differential signal and the voltage at each analog input relative to the supplies. Staying inside the differential full-scale span alone does not prove the individual pins satisfy their limits. Follow the recommended common-mode and drive guidance, including the input network and source settling. Begin with a known bounded stimulus rather than an unknown sensor output. Check protection and grounding separately; an ADC input is not a general-purpose overvoltage-tolerant measurement terminal. Manufacturer documentation.

3. Give the reference its own error budget

Conversion scaling depends on the reference, so identify its voltage, drive arrangement, decoupling and settling behavior. Check that reference loading and board return currents are compatible with the selected converter mode. A nominally precise reference can still introduce noise or dynamic errors through an unsuitable connection. Record reference uncertainty separately from ADC gain, offset and input-source errors. Use the manufacturer application circuit as a design starting point, not as evidence that an arbitrary substitute component behaves identically. Manufacturer documentation.

4. Associate every sample stream with clock and filter state

Choose the documented filter and mode combination, then determine its output rate and settling behavior from the relevant tables. Wideband and low-latency filters trade bandwidth, rejection and delay differently. Treat reset, restart or configuration changes as acquisition boundaries and allow the specified recovery interval before accepting data. Timestamp data according to the acquisition design rather than host arrival alone. A rapid stream of words can still contain unsettled responses or misleading timing after a mode transition. 5. Match the actual output frame and status option

The converter provides 24-bit data with an optional trailing eight-bit status word. The status can contain a four-bit CRC plus the input-range flag, or an eight-bit CRC selected by configuration. These layouts require different parsing; they are not two names for the same byte. Check the chosen interface mode and whether status is enabled. Implement the documented integrity calculation over the correct bits and reject malformed transfers rather than silently treating status bits as conversion data. Manufacturer documentation.

6. Decode signed codes before applying voltage scaling

The conversion data uses 24-bit two’s-complement coding. Sign-extend the conversion field correctly before arithmetic, excluding any trailing status byte. The ideal code size is twice the reference voltage divided by 2 to the power of 24, subject to the datasheet transfer definition. Test positive, zero and negative synthetic codes in software before using hardware data. Saturation codes require interpretation as limits, not proof that the external signal was accurately measured outside the supported range. Manufacturer documentation.

7. Preserve rejected frames and qualification conditions

Acquire a bounded known input at several useful points and examine offset, noise, clipping and integrity failures. Keep rejected-frame counts and acquisition discontinuities visible in logs. Record clock frequency, operating mode, filter, reference, frame layout and input arrangement with each dataset. Do not report a zero-error transport log as proof of analog accuracy, or a stable average as proof of correct sample timing. This documentation-based checklist defines what to verify; it does not claim independent converter measurements. Manufacturer documentation.
