ADS1119 I2C ADC: 7 Checks for Start Commands and Fresh Data

Use ADS1119 configuration, START/SYNC commands and data-ready timing to keep sixteen-bit results associated with the intended channel, gain and reference. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Choose the intended input pair and electrical limits

ADS1119 offers a multiplexed choice of differential or single-ended inputs, not four simultaneous conversion channels. Record the positive input, negative input and allowed voltage of each physical pin relative to AGND and AVDD. A negative differential value can be legitimate while a negative pin voltage may violate the operating conditions. Check analog and digital supplies independently against the datasheet, along with I2C pull-up levels. Do not connect an unknown higher-voltage signal directly because the software can report signed data. Manufacturer documentation.

2. Verify address straps and the actual command protocol

The two address pins provide documented address-selection options, so derive the address from the board connections rather than scanning and guessing which device answered. Implement the ADS1119 commands and register operations from its own datasheet; a generic ADS1115 driver uses a different programming model. Respect bus speed, repeated-start and timing requirements. Treat an acknowledgement as communication evidence only. It does not identify the selected analog channel or prove that a conversion has occurred after configuration. Manufacturer documentation.

3. Associate the one configuration register with each result

The configuration selects multiplexer, gain, data rate, conversion mode and reference choice. Keep a software copy and, where useful, verify readback after writing it. The available gains are 1 and 4, not an unrestricted programmable amplifier. When changing channels, record which configuration is responsible for the next accepted result. A single shared conversion buffer should not be labeled from whichever channel the application plans to measure next; label it from the configuration actually used for that conversion. Manufacturer documentation.

4. Send START/SYNC instead of waiting for an idle ADC

After reset the device enters a low-power state and waits for START/SYNC. In single-shot mode, a command initiates one conversion and the device returns to low power afterward. To start continuous operation, select continuous mode and then send START/SYNC. The datasheet also requires this command when the conversion-mode bit changes. A successful configuration write following reset is not a general substitute for explicit startup. Make this transition visible in the driver state machine and test it after real power cycling. 5. Handle configuration changes as conversion events

Writing configuration during an ongoing conversion restarts that conversion according to the documented mode behavior. Rapidly rewriting the register can therefore postpone completion or confuse channel attribution. Wait for a qualified ready indication and read the intended result before making the next planned change. Single-cycle digital-filter settling assumes the analog input has settled before conversion begins; an external high-impedance network may need additional time. Separate analog settling, conversion time and I2C transfer time in the scheduler. Manufacturer documentation.

6. Convert signed codes with the selected reference and gain

Use the documented sixteen-bit signed transfer function and retain reference selection and gain with the raw value. The internal reference is nominally 2.048 V; an external reference requires its own voltage, noise and connection checks. The advertised line-frequency rejection applies under the documented data-rate conditions, notably 20 SPS, not automatically at maximum speed. Resolution, noise-free performance, reference accuracy and source accuracy are different quantities. Test positive and negative differential values using a safe source and a traceable comparison instrument. Manufacturer documentation.

7. Test reset, timeout and shutdown without losing sample identity

Exercise hardware or command reset, then confirm default configuration and explicit restart rather than assuming the previous settings survived. POWERDOWN permits an ongoing conversion to complete before entering low power, so document whether that final result is accepted or discarded. Detect bus errors and conversion timeouts as errors, not zero-voltage readings. Save address, configuration, ready timing and raw bytes in diagnostic logs. This guide describes manufacturer behavior; board-specific accuracy and recovery claims require tests on the finished implementation. Manufacturer documentation.
