TCA9554 GPIO Expander: 7 Checks for Pull-Ups and Interrupts

Review TCA9554 GPIO initialization, weak internal pull-ups, output latches and interrupt servicing without assuming TCA9534 behavior or an event queue. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Identify the eight-bit device and address variant

TCA9554 expands I2C into eight configurable GPIO lines. Check the exact part and hardware address straps before selecting a driver; TCA9554A uses a different fixed address portion. The device supports standard and fast I2C operation, not an unlimited bus frequency. Review supply and pull-up levels against the connected host. A successful bus scan establishes an address response only, not the package pin assignment, output polarity or safe startup state of attached hardware. Manufacturer documentation.

2. Account for the internal weak port pull-ups

Unlike TCA9534, TCA9554 includes weak internal pull-up resistors on its P ports, typically around 100 kOhm. Inputs are therefore not electrically identical to an unpulled high-impedance port. The datasheet also notes possible current flow from a port into VCC when an input is driven above the supply through this network. Review mixed-voltage and partially powered cases explicitly. Five-volt-tolerant input wording does not remove every sequencing or backfeed concern, especially when another rail remains active. Manufacturer documentation.

3. Preload the output latch before changing direction

At power-up the ports are configured as inputs and the output register defaults high. If a connected load must begin low, write the intended output-latch value before clearing its configuration bit to enable output drive. Otherwise the old latch value may become visible briefly. Keep a software shadow for deliberate masked updates, while considering reset and other writers. The safe order is a firmware design decision with physical consequences, not merely a cosmetic preference in register initialization. Manufacturer documentation.

4. Distinguish requested output state from the actual pin

The Output Port register reports the stored latch value, whereas the Input Port register reflects incoming pin logic levels. Reading the output latch therefore does not prove a heavily loaded pin reached a valid high voltage. Check source and sink limits, total package current and load wiring. Use external drivers for loads that exceed the GPIO capability, and provide appropriate protection for inductive loads. A register bit set to one is a command, not a current measurement or continuity test. Manufacturer documentation.

5. Keep polarity inversion out of the drive-path explanation

The polarity-inversion register changes the reported logic for inputs as described in the register table; it is not a general physical inverter for every output pin. Define active-low buttons and signals consistently in either device configuration or application decoding, without accidentally inverting twice. Verify the direction mask before interpreting a read. Include unused pins in the plan: internal weak pull-ups provide a defined tendency, but external connections and noise still need consideration in the actual environment. Manufacturer documentation.

6. Service INT as a change indication, not an event counter

INT is open drain and needs a compatible pull-up. Input changes can assert it, while reading the Input Port register or a return to the reference state can clear the condition under the documented rules. The datasheet warns that transitions during the read acknowledge interval can be lost or very short. It is not a latched queue of every edge. Debounce mechanical switches and use suitable hardware capture when exact pulse counts or narrow events matter. Manufacturer documentation.

7. Exercise reset and direction changes before connecting critical loads

Power-cycle within the documented reset conditions and confirm that the driver reestablishes latch, inversion and configuration registers in the safe order. Changing a pin from output to input can itself produce an interrupt if the observed level differs from the input reference state. Test that path alongside disconnected inputs and bus recovery. Log addresses, masks, pull-up values and expected external levels. This manufacturer-based guide does not establish isolation, high-current capability or safety suitability for equipment controlled by the finished board. Manufacturer documentation.
