UCC27614 Gate Driver: 7 Checks for Package Logic and Shared Outputs
Review UCC27614 package-dependent inputs, enable behavior, joined output pins, gate-current limits and safe low-energy waveform checks. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Identify the package before assigning control pins
The SOIC D and SON DSG versions do not present the same input interface. UCC27614D uses a noninverting IN and a dedicated EN, while UCC27614DSG uses IN+ and IN- without that separate enable pin. Read the complete ordering code and the top-view pinout before adapting a schematic. A symbol that hides package differences can produce a dangerous reset state. Save the fitted package identity and controller pin mapping in the project record. Manufacturer documentation.
2. Prove the truth table with low energy
For the dual-input DSG version, the output is high only when IN+ is high and IN- is low. Other defined logic combinations command a low output. On the D version, EN low holds the output low, while a floating EN can leave the input enabled. Do not use an unconnected enable as a shutdown strategy. Apply a defined controller-reset state and verify it with a benign capacitive gate load before connecting an energized power stage. Manufacturer documentation.
3. Join the output pins as documented
The two OUT pins belong to the same output stage and must be shorted together on the application board as instructed by the datasheet. They are not separate turn-on and turn-off outputs like those on some split-output drivers. If asymmetric gate resistance is needed, implement an appropriately reviewed external resistor and diode network at the common gate-drive path. Check continuity and loop routing before applying power. Treating the pins as independent channels can defeat the intended current path and thermal behavior. Manufacturer documentation.
4. Separate recommended supply from absolute maximum
The recommended VDD range is 4.5V to 26V; the 30V absolute-maximum headline is not an operating target. The connected MOSFET or IGBT gate may require a much narrower voltage range. Include rail tolerance and ringing in the gate-voltage assessment. Input negative-voltage tolerance also does not authorize negative output excursions beyond the documented conditions. Keep the driver supply, logic thresholds and power-switch gate limits in separate rows of the design checklist so one rating is not substituted for another. Manufacturer documentation.

5. Budget gate charge rather than continuous peak current
The approximately 10A source and sink figures are typical transient drive capabilities, not continuous output current available to an external load. Estimate repetitive drive demand using gate charge, drive voltage and switching frequency at the actual power-switch operating point. Include external gate resistance, output-stage loss and package temperature. A small average current can still produce large local charging pulses. Verify supply bypassing and current-loop geometry before increasing switching frequency or reducing resistance in pursuit of faster edges. Manufacturer documentation.
6. Keep the switching reference controlled
Place local decoupling close to the driver and keep the gate-current return path compact. Measure gate voltage relative to the switch source or emitter with an appropriate probing method, not through a long ground lead that can create misleading ringing. This low-side driver provides no safety isolation. A floating or high-side arrangement requires separately justified bias and signal isolation. Do not connect a ground-referenced controller directly into a high-energy floating circuit merely because the driver has robust input pins. Manufacturer documentation.
7. Test disable and recovery before load operation
Use a current-limited low-voltage setup to check polarity, startup, undervoltage recovery and every intended shutdown path. Inspect gate overshoot, undershoot, off-state voltage and temperature before proceeding to a bounded switching load. Keep mains and high-energy buses outside a beginner validation procedure. Record package, supply, gate resistor network, load capacitance, frequency and probe arrangement with each capture. A useful result is a documented safe control envelope, not an unsupported declaration that a driver is suitable for every power stage. Manufacturer documentation.
