TMUX1219 Analog Switch: 7 Checks for Rail Limits and Break-Before-Make

Plan TMUX1219 signal selection with rail-bounded inputs, defined selection, break-before-make gaps and source-settling checks. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Map the single two-to-one signal path

TMUX1219 is a bidirectional SPDT switch: SEL low connects S1 to D, and SEL high connects S2 to D. It does not have a separate all-off enable input. Identify which side can drive voltage and which side receives it, even though the conducting channel is bidirectional. Document the exact package pinout and selection polarity before attaching real sources. A two-source connection also needs a plan for controller reset so the destination does not receive an unintended startup signal. Manufacturer documentation.

2. Keep every signal between ground and VDD

The recommended supply range is 1.08V to 5.5V, but the analog signal range remains between ground and the actual switch supply. A 5V-tolerant control input does not make a 5V analog signal valid when VDD is 1.8V. Check source tolerance, startup transients and destination bias separately. Signals below ground require a different arrangement. Review the complete voltage envelope before using the device to select between sensors that operate from different supply rails. Manufacturer documentation.

3. Distinguish fail-safe logic from analog protection

Fail-safe logic allows the select-control voltage to be applied before the switch supply within its documented limits. That statement concerns the logic control, not an unlimited powered-off analog input range. Do not borrow powered-off signal protection claims from another TMUX part. Make a table for every relevant power state showing VDD, SEL and each signal voltage. If the application requires an analog source to remain present while VDD is absent, verify that requirement explicitly rather than assuming the family name guarantees it. Manufacturer documentation.

4. Account for the break-before-make interval

The switch disconnects the previous path before connecting the next, avoiding intentional overlap between sources. During that interval the destination may be temporarily un-driven, retaining charge or moving through external bias and leakage. This can matter in an amplifier feedback network or a high-impedance measurement node. Do not describe break-before-make as uninterrupted signal transfer. Test the transition itself and provide an appropriate stability or hold strategy if the surrounding circuit cannot tolerate the brief open path. Manufacturer documentation.

5. Budget on-resistance and source settling

The low on-resistance headline is conditional and changes with operating conditions. Include its effect with the source impedance, load resistance and any sampling capacitor. For a simple RC network, the time constant is resistance multiplied by capacitance; reaching precision accuracy takes multiple time constants, not just the switch transition time. Charge injection and source recovery can add further error. Evaluate the combined source-switch-receiver path at the required accuracy instead of equating a nanosecond switching specification with a fully settled measurement. Manufacturer documentation.

6. Avoid routing an active bus without a handover plan

A general-purpose switch does not understand an I2C transaction, SPI command or analog acquisition window. Arrange selection changes when endpoints are in an appropriate idle state, and verify that pullups or external bias do not violate rail limits. For digital use, include propagation, edge shape and endpoint thresholds in the assessment. For analog use, inspect transient disturbance and recovery. The same switch can serve both applications, but the evidence needed to validate them is different. Manufacturer documentation.

7. Preserve a repeatable channel-comparison test

Use two known bounded sources, inspect both steady selections and capture repeated selection transitions. Record supply, source impedances, load, select timing and the delay before accepting a sample. Repeat with the intended receiver sampling normally, since a high-impedance meter can hide dynamic loading errors. Flag unsettled or out-of-range readings instead of averaging them into plausible data. This gives a specific qualification record for the assembled path rather than a claim that every board using the component has identical precision or timing. Manufacturer documentation.
