REF6025 Buffered Reference: 7 Checks for Kelvin Sense and the SS Pin
Plan REF6025 ADC references with force/sense routing, required filter capacitors, conditional burst performance and the correct short-circuit setting. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Identify the buffered 2.5V reference
REF6025 combines a precision 2.5V reference with an ADC-drive buffer. Its recommended input range is 3V to 5.5V under the stated conditions; do not substitute the supply limits of another REF60 output-voltage variant. The integrated buffer is intended to handle a reference load, not serve as a general-purpose power rail. Record the complete ordering code and package pinout before copying a layout. A shared reference family name does not make different output voltages or current limits interchangeable. Manufacturer documentation.
2. Keep force and sense connections distinct
OUT_F supplies current while OUT_S senses the voltage at the load; GND_F and GND_S similarly separate current return from the quiet sense reference. Route the sense connections to the intended reference point as instructed, without using them as substitute load-current conductors. Leaving sense pins floating is not a valid simplification. Review the converter reference-ground location and the path of charging current. A Kelvin arrangement only helps when the PCB connections preserve the intended separation rather than rejoining at an arbitrary noisy point. Manufacturer documentation.
3. Fit the required filter and output capacitors
The FILT pin requires at least one microfarad to ground for stability according to the pin guidance. The output also has a documented stable-capacitance range, with headline performance tied to particular capacitor values. These components perform different functions and cannot replace one another. Check effective capacitance, leakage, voltage rating and placement. Do not hang an unspecified filter network on the sense node. Use the manufacturer circuit as a starting point, then evaluate the real ADC reference load and board parasitics. Manufacturer documentation.
4. Do not interpret SS as a soft-start pin
On REF6025, SS programs short-circuit current behavior; it is not a generic soft-start capacitor input. The pin guidance specifies a resistor arrangement for current limiting and a VIN connection for the highest limit. A capacitor copied from a regulator with a similarly named pin is therefore inappropriate. Review the sourcing-limit relationship and permitted load for the selected connection. The nominal recommended reference output current is only a few milliamps, so a protection setting must not be confused with unlimited useful drive capability. Manufacturer documentation.

5. Treat first-sample claims as conditional
The documentation describes first-sample performance with specified ADCs and circuit conditions. That is valuable characterization, not a universal guarantee that every converter or burst pattern settles to the same accuracy. Check the converter reference demand, local capacitance, burst spacing and return-current path. Observe droop and recovery during actual conversions rather than only with the ADC idle. If an added buffer or RC stage is considered, include its stability and settling effects instead of assuming more filtering always improves the result. Manufacturer documentation.
6. Budget accuracy, noise and startup separately
The initial accuracy headline of 0.05% corresponds to 1.25mV at 2.5V before temperature, load and system contributions. Noise figures refer to specified bandwidths and capacitors; they are not interchangeable with initial error. Startup and enable recovery can take much longer than a converter sample interval, especially with the intended filter network. Define when readings become valid using the documented settling conditions and the application error target. Preserve the actual warmup and measurement interval with every precision comparison. Manufacturer documentation.
7. Measure at the converter reference point
Use a suitable instrument and low-noise probing method at the ADC reference connection, preserving the intended force/sense routing. Record supply, load pattern, capacitor network, temperature and instrument uncertainty. Compare steady conversion and burst operation, including the first accepted sample after the required settling delay. A stable multimeter display does not establish high-frequency reference impedance. Keep measured droop and conversion evidence distinct from manufacturer examples so the final record accurately describes one qualified implementation rather than an untested universal performance promise.
