TLC5947 LED Driver: 7 Checks for Safe Startup and PWM Frames

TLC5947 planning checks for blanked startup, 288-bit frames, logic thresholds, LED current and thermal limits. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Separate the logic supply from the LED supply

The TLC5947 provides 24 constant-current sink outputs, not 24 independent voltage sources. Its logic supply operates from 3.0 V to 5.5 V; the separate LED supply capability does not permit applying 30 V to logic pins. Draw the complete LED current paths, connector polarity and ground return before choosing a supply. Check output compliance and dissipation for the actual LED strings rather than treating the maximum LED-supply rating as a recommended operating point. Manufacturer documentation.

2. Check the real input-high requirement

A microcontroller with 3.3 V GPIO is not automatically compatible with a TLC5947 powered at 5 V. The specified high-input requirement is 0.7 times VCC, which becomes 3.5 V at that supply. Select a supported common logic rail or a suitable translator, including its enable and startup behavior. Verify SIN, SCLK, XLAT and BLANK at the receiver pins; a clean waveform at the controller does not establish adequate voltage margin at the driver. Manufacturer documentation.

3. Hold BLANK high until a known frame is latched

The grayscale shift register and latch do not contain a guaranteed useful startup pattern. Keep BLANK high while supplies stabilize and while a complete known frame is shifted and latched. Only release blanking after the control signals and current-setting network are established. Include controller reset and cable-disconnection states in this plan. An initialized software buffer alone cannot prevent an unintended flash before firmware gains control of the physical pins. Manufacturer documentation.

4. Send exactly 288 bits in the documented order

Each frame contains 24 twelve-bit grayscale values. Shift OUT23 first, most-significant bit first, continuing through OUT0. SIN is captured on rising SCLK edges, while SOUT changes on falling edges. A rising XLAT transfers the frame into the output latch; respect the documented interval before the next rising SCLK, including the 100 ns requirement. Test channel order with one modestly driven LED at a time before displaying multichannel animations or connecting a long cascade. Manufacturer documentation.

5. Treat PWM codes and update timing separately

An internal oscillator runs the repeating grayscale PWM without an external grayscale clock. Code zero is off, 2048 represents 50 percent duty, and 4095 corresponds to approximately 99.98 percent, not a mathematically continuous high output. XLAT forces outputs off until the next grayscale period without resetting the grayscale counter to zero. Consequently frequent latching can affect observed brightness. Measure frame-update behavior separately from the nominal twelve-bit code resolution and document the chosen update rate. Manufacturer documentation.

6. Budget current and heat across all channels

One external IREF resistor sets the full-on current for every channel. The typical relation is RIREF = 41 times 1.20 V divided by LED current in amperes: approximately 4.92 kilohms for 10 mA. Allow for specified tolerances, resistor tolerance, LED voltage variation and simultaneous-channel power. A conditional 30 mA channel capability is not permission to ignore package temperature. Thermal shutdown can automatically restart after cooling; repeated cycling is a design failure, not acceptable brightness regulation. Manufacturer documentation.

7. Qualify startup, frames and cascades independently

Record rail voltages, BLANK state, frame length, latch spacing, channel mapping, current and package temperature under bounded conditions. The standalone serial-clock headline and the cascaded limit differ: the documented 30 MHz and 15 MHz conditions must not be conflated. Start with low brightness and a current-limited supply, then expand channel count gradually. Preserve a known all-off frame for fault recovery. This checklist supports a reviewed design; it does not establish an eye-safe high-power lighting system. Manufacturer documentation.
