UCC27516 Gate Driver: 7 Checks for Dual-Input Enable and Gate Stress

Review UCC27516 dual-input logic, supply limits, gate charge, layout and startup before qualifying low-side MOSFET switching. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Confirm the package and low-side reference

UCC27516 is a single-channel low-side gate driver in a six-pin SON package. Verify the exact footprint, exposed-pad connection and pin assignments rather than borrowing a five-pin family schematic. The driver ground normally follows the power switch source or emitter reference. This is not a floating high-side driver and supplies no galvanic isolation. Establish the power-stage return paths and keep any first experiment on an appropriately protected, low-voltage supply. Manufacturer documentation.

2. Select VDD from the transistor gate requirements

The recommended driver supply spans 4.5 V to 18 V, but the chosen MOSFET or IGBT can impose a lower allowable gate voltage. Compare recommended drive voltage and absolute gate limits, including ringing, against the entire supply tolerance. A driver output approaching VDD does not regulate the gate to a separate safe value. Add local decoupling and evaluate the actual gate-to-source waveform rather than relying on the nominal supply label. Manufacturer documentation.

3. Implement the dual-input truth table explicitly

The output is high only when IN+ is high and IN− is low. For noninverting operation, apply PWM to IN+ and hold IN− low; IN− can then act as an active-high disable. For inverting operation, hold IN+ high and drive IN−. Floating inputs force a low output through the internal bias arrangement, but deliberate external states remain preferable. Document both input levels during boot, reset, cable removal and fault handling. Manufacturer documentation.

4. Use guaranteed input thresholds rather than typical values

The input logic thresholds are designed independently of VDD and support common controller interfaces. Nevertheless, compare the datasheet minimum and maximum thresholds with the controller output specifications across voltage and temperature. Typical threshold figures are not guaranteed logic margins. Include ground bounce, ringing and input pulse width in that review. A slowly changing or noisy control signal can create unwanted transitions even when its steady high and low levels look acceptable. Manufacturer documentation.

5. Treat four amperes as transient gate-drive capability

The advertised 4 A source and sink capability describes brief gate charging and discharging, not continuous load current. Estimate average driver demand from gate charge and switching frequency, then include internal consumption and switching losses. Select gate resistance from the desired edge behavior and transistor limits. Faster edges may increase electromagnetic interference and overshoot. A large current headline alone cannot establish that the package, gate resistor or transistor will remain cool. Manufacturer documentation.

6. Minimize the gate loop before tuning edge speed

Place the bypass capacitor, driver and switching transistor to minimize the gate-current loop. Keep power current out of the control reference path and follow the manufacturer layout recommendations for the exposed pad. Use an appropriate probe connection when observing gate voltage; a long probe ground lead can add misleading ringing. Do not copy split-output resistor arrangements from a different family device without checking this part’s actual output topology and pin diagram. Manufacturer documentation.

7. Qualify startup and disable at the transistor terminals

Under-voltage lockout holds the output low while the driver supply is inadequate. Verify the actual transition through supply ramp, controller reset and disable commands using safe test conditions. Record VDD, both logic inputs and gate-to-source voltage together. A low driver output does not guarantee the entire mechanical or electrical system is safe if another path energizes the load. Retain component values, switching frequency and waveform conditions before progressing to higher stored energy. Manufacturer documentation.
