SGP30 Air Quality Sensor: 7 eCO2 and Baseline Checks

SGP30: air response to equivalent outputs — conceptual signal flow, not a wiring schematic

The SGP30 produces processed TVOC and CO2-equivalent signals from a gas-sensing platform. Those outputs can support indoor trend monitoring, but neither the sensor name nor a ppm display makes it a direct CO2 concentration instrument or a certified gas alarm.

Keep equivalent CO2 clearly labeled

The CO2eq output is calculated from the sensor’s gas response and compensation algorithm. It is not a direct optical measurement of CO2. Keep the equivalent qualifier in logs and on displays; substituting it for actual CO2 in a ventilation or exposure claim can misrepresent what the module measures.

Verify the carrier around the 1.8 V sensor

The sensor uses a low-voltage supply and heated sensing elements. A carrier can add regulation and bus translation, but check those features explicitly. A bare SGP30 should not be wired to an arbitrary 3.3 V or 5 V rail merely because another breakout accepts that input.

Plan regular acquisition rather than occasional polling

After IAQ initialization, the documented algorithm requires the measurement command at regular one-second intervals. A project that wakes once every several minutes and reads one value is not operating the baseline algorithm as specified. Include host scheduling and power strategy in the selection decision.

Treat warm-up and baseline as real state

Startup outputs and an incompletely established baseline are not equivalent to fully conditioned operation. Choose a driver that exposes initialization and baseline management clearly. Record device identity, runtime and the conditions under which any saved baseline was obtained before restoring it after a reset.

Use absolute humidity for compensation

The compensation input is absolute humidity, not relative humidity percent. It must come from a suitable external temperature/humidity observation and be converted using the documented units and encoding. A constant guessed percent passed into the wrong API can make a supposedly compensated result misleading.

Keep the sensing opening clean and noncondensing

Follow the manufacturer handling recommendations and keep the sensor away from direct liquid contact and unsuitable residues. Nearby solvents or cleaning products can dominate the response. Do not spray aerosols, solvents or fuel vapour onto the sensor to prove that it works.

Define a limited monitoring role

Use clear units and data age for qualitative indoor trends, with explicit unavailable and conditioning states. An SGP30 does not identify every gas or replace certified CO, smoke or combustible-gas detectors. A learning display must not label a room safe solely because TVOC or eCO2 appears low.

Frequently asked questions

Is CO2eq the same as a CO2 reading from SCD40?

No. It is an algorithm-derived equivalent signal, not a direct CO2 measurement.

Can relative humidity be sent directly as compensation?

Not to an API that expects absolute humidity. Check the input unit and encoding for the installed driver.
