CCS811 Arduino: 7 App-Mode and Data-Ready Checks

CCS811: conditioned air-quality outputs — conceptual signal flow, not a wiring schematic

A CCS811 Arduino test should prove the device entered its application state before reading processed air-quality values. Keep startup, conditioning and successful samples distinct, and use a driver that exposes status rather than treating every returned integer as a valid environmental observation.

Verify board wiring and nWAKE

Identify supply, ground, bus signals, address selection and wake handling from the carrier schematic. The chip’s nWAKE input is active low during I2C transactions, subject to documented timing. Confirm whether the board ties it low or expects host control before troubleshooting the register map.

Check identity and application availability

The address is 0x5A or 0x5B according to hardware selection. Read supported identity and status information, confirm that application firmware is present, and use the documented APP_START sequence. A responding bootloader is not the same as a running IAQ measurement application.

Select a documented processed-measurement mode

Use the intended one-, ten- or sixty-second IAQ mode through the driver and record it in the log. The 250 ms raw-measurement mode does not automatically provide faster processed eCO2 and eTVOC. Follow idle/wait requirements when changing to a lower sample rate rather than switching modes on every loop.

Respect conditioning and data-ready state

Observe the documented initial-use and run-in requirements before treating readings as conditioned results. Check DATA_READY at the configured interval and read a complete result frame. Repeatedly printing the same registers at a faster loop rate does not produce independent fresh measurements.

Inspect status and ERROR_ID

Processed result data is accompanied by device status and error information. Reject unavailable or faulted observations and retain the error context for diagnosis. Do not suppress heater or supply faults merely to keep a graph looking continuous, or convert an error into zero TVOC.

Update environmental compensation carefully

Supply actual external temperature and humidity in the format expected by the installed driver. The first result after an ENV_DATA change may not yet reflect the new compensation. Keep the compensation observation’s age visible and do not write a baseline before the manufacturer’s conditioning requirements are met.

Validate recovery with a harmless software fault

Test an incorrect address in software and require an unavailable state, then restore the known configuration and restart properly. Log successful acquisition time separately from loop time. Use normal indoor air only; the module is not a certified alarm and hazardous vapours are not an appropriate test stimulus.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the chip answer but never return new IAQ data?

Check application state, measurement mode, wake wiring and DATA_READY, not only address acknowledgment.

Can I use the fastest mode as a four-times-faster eCO2 logger?

Do not assume that. The raw mode and processed IAQ modes have different documented behaviour.
