TLC5940 LED Driver: 7 Current and Clock Checks

TLC5940: current and grayscale timing — conceptual signal flow, not a wiring schematic

A TLC5940 is a sixteen-channel constant-current sink LED driver, not a bank of ordinary voltage outputs. Select the LED wiring, current-setting resistor and timing resources together so the project can meet brightness and temperature requirements without relying on headline channel current alone.

Match the sink-output topology

Outputs draw current toward ground through the LEDs; they do not source arbitrary logic-level signals. Check the LED anode supply, cathode connection and common reference. A common-cathode RGB arrangement is not automatically compatible with a driver intended to sink separate cathode currents.

Set peak current using IREF

The external resistor sets the maximum channel current, while PWM controls average on-time. TI specifies a supported current-setting range and warns against simply choosing an arbitrarily tiny peak current. Lower apparent brightness can instead use supported dot correction and grayscale control with a valid IREF setting.

Budget for total dissipation

Each active output dissipates power related to current and its voltage drop. Sixteen channels at an advertised per-channel maximum may exceed the thermal capability of a particular package or carrier. Check the full calculation, layout and supply headroom before populating every output.

Plan grayscale timing resources

The device needs GSCLK and BLANK timing as well as serial data and a latch signal. A library may occupy a microcontroller timer or particular pins. Check for conflicts with servo, audio or other PWM code before assuming a simple SPI transfer is sufficient.

Distinguish grayscale from dot correction

Grayscale uses twelve-bit PWM values, while dot correction uses six-bit current scaling. These controls serve different roles and have different transfer modes. A change in peak current or dot correction can affect appearance even when the stored grayscale value is unchanged.

Keep programming modes under control

Dot-correction storage and programming controls need the documented sequencing. An ordinary bring-up should not attempt elevated-voltage EEPROM programming. Use a supported driver workflow and avoid treating programming pins as spare general-purpose connections on an unfamiliar breakout.

Treat diagnostics as engineering information

Open-LED and thermal indications can help diagnosis but do not certify a completed lamp or make it safe for unattended high-power use. Begin with one modest-current LED and a current-limited low-voltage supply, then validate the actual populated board before scaling the installation.

Frequently asked questions

Is serial data alone enough to produce continuous grayscale output?

No. The required grayscale clock and blanking sequence must also be provided.

Does a low PWM value reduce the instantaneous current limit?

It mainly changes on-time. IREF and current-scaling settings govern the enabled-channel current.
