ADS8318 SAR ADC: 7 Checks for CONVST, Busy Bits and Signed Codes

Acquire ADS8318 data with seven checks for differential drive, reference loading, CONVST timing, serial busy-bit options and endpoint-verified signed codes. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Separate analog and interface supply requirements

ADS8318 is a sixteen-bit SAR converter with separate analog and digital-interface supply pins. The analog supply is specified from 4.5 V to 5.5 V, while the interface supply permits a different lower range under its stated conditions. Do not power the analog section from a controller rail simply because its digital interface can use that voltage. Provide local decoupling and a suitable common ground, then check controller thresholds and data timing at the selected interface voltage. Manufacturer documentation.

2. Drive the differential pair around its common mode

The differential span extends from minus VREF to plus VREF, with the documented common-mode target near VREF divided by two. This is not permission to apply a negative voltage to an individual input pin. Design both input trajectories together and check each pin against its allowed range. A single-ended sensor may require a suitable differential driver. Verify the reference, input amplitude and common-mode conditions before interpreting a full-scale differential code as a safe analog connection. Manufacturer documentation.

3. Budget reference and acquisition settling

The external reference and switched-capacitor input need suitable dynamic drive, not just accurate steady-state voltages. Review reference range, decoupling, source impedance and the required acquisition interval at the intended sampling rate. Output-read time and acquisition share part of the cycle, so serial decisions affect the available analog settling budget. Test a known bounded source first. Include the actual driver, filter and largest expected input step when deciding whether the converter can reach the desired accuracy before sampling. Manufacturer documentation.

4. Start conversion with the correct CONVST edge

The input is sampled and conversion starts on the rising edge of CONVST. SDI state at that event helps select the interface mode, so it must be established with the required setup and hold timing. Do not copy a falling-edge conversion recipe from another SAR device. Use the complete timing diagram for the chosen arrangement and respect conversion, acquisition and minimum pulse durations. A fast serial clock alone does not determine the maximum sustainable conversion rate. Manufacturer documentation.

5. Select a complete serial option including busy behavior

The device supports CS and daisy-chain arrangements, with multiple three-wire or four-wire options and optional busy indication before the sixteen data bits. A busy indication is part of the serial behavior, not a separate dedicated package pin. Implement one documented option end to end and account for any preceding bit when assembling the word. Confirm SDI, CONVST and SDO activity on a logic trace; an off-by-one frame can resemble analog gain or sign trouble. Manufacturer documentation.

6. Validate the code map using endpoint patterns

Use the actual transfer-code examples rather than relying on a table heading alone. The documented values place zero differential at 0x0000, one negative step at 0xFFFF, negative full scale at 0x8000 and positive near-full-scale at 0x7FFF. Those patterns require signed two’s-complement interpretation. The nominal step is twice VREF divided by 65536. Test sign extension and both polarities explicitly before scaling real data, and retain the raw word so a decoder error remains distinguishable from an analog fault. Manufacturer documentation.

7. Qualify timing noise and conversion identity

The datasheet recommends avoiding unnecessary serial-clock activity during conversion because digital edges can disturb the analog process. Compare the chosen read sequence with the intended quiet conversion interval, then record clock configuration, reference, raw code and sample timestamp. Exercise zero differential and known positive and negative values within the permitted pin range. Treat incomplete or misaligned frames as invalid instead of smoothing them into a plausible result. Claimed sixteen-bit resolution does not establish sixteen-bit accuracy in the finished circuit. Manufacturer documentation.
