INA214 Current Monitor: 7 Checks for Fixed Gain and Filter Error

Plan INA214 current sensing with seven checks for the fixed gain, variant accuracy, reference drive, shunt connections, filter resistance and ADC headroom. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Identify the gain and accuracy version

INA214 is the 100 V/V member of the INA21x family. Nearby part numbers have different gains, and A, B and C accuracy versions have specification differences. Do not assign the highlighted offset specification of another family member to this device without checking the electrical table. Record the full ordering code, package and selected error limits. A controller can apply a perfect arithmetic conversion to the wrong installed gain and still produce consistently incorrect current readings. Manufacturer documentation.

2. Separate supply and common-mode constraints

The amplifier operates from a 2.7 V to 26 V supply while sensing a wider low-side or high-side common-mode envelope as documented for the exact version. Check recommended conditions and absolute limits independently, including negative bus transients. A controller-compatible output supply does not protect the sense inputs from an excessive bus event. Provide local bypassing and review power sequencing. Establish a bounded, protected test arrangement before connecting a shunt to an energized load or battery system. Manufacturer documentation.

3. Calculate both shunt drop and output range

Use VSHUNT = I × RSHUNT and the nominal relationship VOUT = REF + 100 × VSHUNT. Check the whole signed current range against output swing and the following ADC limits. Include shunt tolerance, heating, amplifier offset, gain error and reference error rather than counting digital resolution alone. Lower shunt resistance reduces dissipation but increases the relative effect of voltage errors. Confirm the resistor power rating with I²R and the intended pulse and continuous operating conditions. Manufacturer documentation.

4. Route the sense connections as measurements

Connect each sense input close to the corresponding shunt terminal so load-carrying copper resistance does not become part of an unintended measurement. Package drawings and duplicated input pins, where present, must be followed explicitly. Keep high-current return paths away from the reference and signal ground. Check connector and solder-joint contributions when validating small drops. A calibration performed on one current route can become invalid after a layout or wiring change that alters the sensed resistance. Manufacturer documentation.

5. Treat input-filter resistors as an error source

The manufacturer input-filter discussion recommends keeping added series resistance at 10 ohms or less where possible. Internal bias-network mismatch and resistor tolerances mean an arbitrary large RC network can create differential error and gain error. Matching external resistors does not eliminate every interaction. Select a bandwidth target first and evaluate the documented filter model. Output filtering is another option, but its effect on drive impedance and ADC acquisition settling must also be reviewed rather than assumed harmless. Manufacturer documentation.

6. Drive REF deliberately and reserve settling time

REF establishes the output baseline and must not float. Choose a sufficiently driven reference appropriate for unidirectional or bidirectional operation, then check its noise, allowed voltage and startup behavior. A zero-current output should be compared with the actual REF voltage, not an assumed midpoint. Allow the amplifier and any external filter to settle after current changes or startup. Averaging can reduce some noise, but it cannot reconstruct clipped excursions or remove a systematic reference-loading error. Manufacturer documentation.

7. Qualify the assembled channel with traceable observations

Begin at zero current, then apply several known bounded current points within the designed range. Record reference voltage, supply, shunt temperature, output and raw ADC word with the elapsed acquisition time. Separate offset correction from gain correction and mark out-of-range readings. Repeat the relevant load and temperature conditions before accepting the channel. Describe the resulting limits as circuit qualification, not as a claim that a zero-drift amplifier automatically makes the entire current measurement accurate. Manufacturer documentation.
