IRF520 Arduino Modules: Check the Actual Gate-Driver Circuit

Three-block guide showing control input, gate-drive stage and MOSFET load-path concepts

An IRF520 MOSFET driver module for Arduino should be assessed as a circuit, not accepted from its title. Before adding a motor, strip light or heater, establish whether the board really boosts gate drive and whether its power path suits the proposed load.

Identify the module revision before wiring

Obtain the exact schematic and match it to the received PCB, component markings and terminal labels. Trace supply, load return and signal reference with power removed. Similar-looking boards can use different devices or header order. A drawing for the bare IRF520 package does not identify an arbitrary module’s external terminals.

Look for an actual driver stage

Determine whether the input feeds the MOSFET gate through passive parts or a dedicated active driver. If the gate simply follows the GPIO, a 5 V input does not become the 10 V gate-source condition used for IRF520’s specified resistance. The word driver printed in a shop title is not evidence of voltage boost or strong gate-charge capability.

Check controller and load power separately

The controller signal must stay within its pin current and voltage limits. The load supply and current path must be appropriate for the board terminals, traces and transistor. Never route the load current through Arduino pins or thin breadboard jumpers. Keep this evaluation to a low-voltage, current-limited setup with no hazardous moving or heating load.

Use a small resistive test before a demanding load

Begin with a documented low-current resistive or resistor-limited indicator load. Establish the module’s intended off state before enabling anything. Measure voltage across gate and source and across drain and source, using suitable ground-referenced equipment. Do not infer exact resistance from an ordinary meter measurement near its resolution limit.

Interpret the measurements without overclaiming

A substantial on-state drain-source voltage can indicate inadequate drive, excessive current, wiring loss or another fault. Separate wiring drops from the transistor measurement. Calculate dissipation using measured current and voltage where appropriate, but do not extrapolate a tiny test to a high-current continuous rating. Stop if the device heats unexpectedly.

Consider switching speed and protection before PWM

Rapid gate charging and discharging places different demands on a GPIO or driver from a static LED demonstration. A large inductive load additionally requires a deliberately designed suppression path. Confirm reset behavior and keep the gate inactive when the controller is disconnected. If the module has no credible electrical documentation, choose a better-documented switch rather than discovering its limit destructively.

Availability and illustration note

No matching product was found in the checked Epro catalog for this topic on 19 October 2026. This article therefore does not quote an Epro price or claim stock. The original illustration shows conceptual signal flow only, not a complete circuit or a photograph of a supplied product. Obtain a documented component or carrier with a known pinout and electrical specification.

Frequently asked questions

Can a passive input resistor boost the gate to 10 V?

No. A suitable active driver and supply arrangement is needed when the application requires a higher gate voltage.

Can a tiny LED test establish a motor-current rating?

No. It only checks limited basic behavior and cannot validate high-current thermal or inductive performance.
