OPA320 CMOS Op Amp: 7 Checks for ADC Drive and Suffix Pins

Design OPA320 signal conditioning with seven checks for CMOS input behavior, low-voltage headroom, ADC settling, capacitive loads and shutdown-only S variants. This is a documentation-based planning guide, not a report of independent hands-on testing.

1. Identify the base device and shutdown variant

OPA320 is the single-channel amplifier without a shutdown pin; OPA320S adds that function in a different pin count. The dual versions also have their own package and shutdown arrangements. Confirm the complete ordering code and package drawing before writing an enable routine or adapting a footprint. A title mentioning shutdown for the overall family does not mean every member provides it. Treat an unconnected or wrongly mapped control pin as a hardware issue, not a firmware timing problem. Manufacturer documentation.

2. Keep the supply range and input architecture distinct

The family operates from a total 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply and uses a CMOS input architecture with a charge pump to avoid a complementary-input crossover region. It is not a zero-drift amplifier merely because it has low offset and zero-crossover behavior. Those descriptions address different error mechanisms. Review offset, bias and temperature limits for the intended operating point rather than importing the specifications or startup expectations of an auto-zero precision amplifier. Manufacturer documentation.

3. Check input range and output swing separately

The documented common-mode range extends slightly beyond both supply rails, while output swing remains dependent on loading and operating conditions. Calculate the required output at the selected gain and compare it with the actual swing limits. A typical near-rail figure is not an unconditional guarantee for a loaded ADC driver. Review unpowered-input and differential-input protection as well. Staying inside the linear common-mode range is a different requirement from surviving a voltage without damage. Manufacturer documentation.

4. Budget the ADC acquisition interval explicitly

OPA320 is suited to driving sampling converters, but its bandwidth and slew rate do not alone prove that a particular ADC input settles accurately. Include sampling capacitance, kickback, source impedance, feedback gain and any RC network. Define the largest step and the allowable residual error at the sampling instant. Use the relevant manufacturer response guidance and then qualify the complete chain. A fast first edge can still be followed by ringing or slow precision settling that matters to the conversion. 5. Review capacitive loads and isolation components

Cable capacitance, input filters and sample-and-hold networks can alter loop stability. Evaluate the documented capacitive-load response and any output-isolation resistor with the actual closed-loop gain. A resistor that improves stability can also affect acquisition settling and noise. Keep the feedback pickup point intentional, provide local supply bypassing and route sensitive inputs away from switching returns. Do not approve a filter solely because it removes visible high-frequency noise while ignoring its effect on the required signal bandwidth. Manufacturer documentation.

6. Qualify S-variant shutdown without assuming immediate accuracy

For the S variants, the shutdown input is active low and has specified thresholds relative to the supplies. Full and partial shutdown cases can have different enable-time behavior in the dual device. The specified enable timing is defined by an output-percentage criterion, not a promise of final precision settling in the assembled application. Keep inputs and loads within their documented conditions while disabled, and allow the entire signal chain to recover before accepting a new measurement. Manufacturer documentation.

7. Validate DC error and dynamic response separately

Use a bounded source to check several DC points, then test the largest relevant transitions at the intended sampling rate. Record rails, temperature, gain, output load, filter values and time since enabling where applicable. Evaluate noise at a stated bandwidth and keep raw ADC data for diagnosis. Low bias current, low offset and twenty-megahertz bandwidth are useful device characteristics, but they do not eliminate board leakage, reference error or converter acquisition limits. Qualify the complete channel under its actual conditions. Manufacturer documentation.
