MCP9808 Temperature Sensor: 7 Accuracy and Layout Checks

MCP9808: temperature and status — conceptual signal flow, not a wiring schematic

An MCP9808 is a digital temperature sensor, but selecting a fine resolution does not remove installation error. Match the documented electrical specifications and thermal layout to the temperature you actually want to observe before choosing a breakout for a room logger.

Separate accuracy from resolution

The device offers selectable steps down to 0.0625 degrees Celsius. Those small steps are not a guarantee of equally small absolute error. Microchip specifies a maximum error of 0.5 degrees Celsius over the stated minus 20 to 100 degree interval, with different limits across the full operating range.

Budget for conversion time

Finer resolution takes longer: the documented typical conversion time rises from about 30 milliseconds at the coarsest setting to about 250 milliseconds at the finest. Select an update rate that fits the application and remember that typical timing is not a universal worst-case completion guarantee.

Verify supply and bus compatibility

The sensor supply range is 2.7 to 5.5 V, but a host input can still be damaged by an unsuitable pull-up rail. Check the exact breakout schematic and every connected device. A wide sensor supply range does not automatically make the entire shared bus compatible with 5 V.

Keep the thermal path representative

A sensor beside a regulator, charging circuit or radio can read board heating instead of room air. Consider copper area, enclosure ventilation and distance from warm components. Compare only after thermal settling; a quick side-by-side observation immediately after touching a board is not a meaningful accuracy test.

Plan hardware address options

Three address inputs support eight addresses in the documented range. Check how the carrier straps those inputs before ordering multiple boards. Software cannot select a different address if the physical straps are unchanged, and identical default addresses can hide a conflict during a simple scan.

Understand alert and configuration locks

The alert output supports threshold-related functions and requires a suitable pull-up when used. Review hysteresis, polarity and any configuration lock bits before writing them. A demonstration should not enable a lock casually and then treat rejected threshold changes as a broken sensor.

Choose a limited measurement claim

A correctly integrated part can support a useful environmental monitor. It does not by itself make a complete assembly traceably calibrated, medically certified or suitable as the sole protection against overheating. Document board placement and uncertainty as well as the chosen digital resolution.

Frequently asked questions

Does 0.0625 degree resolution guarantee that accuracy?

No. Resolution is the output step; guaranteed accuracy and installation errors are separate.

Can a shared bus use any pull-up voltage within the sensor supply range?

No. The pull-up voltage must also meet the host and every other connected device limit.
