SGP30 Arduino: 7 Timing, CRC and Humidity Checks

SGP30: air response to equivalent outputs — conceptual signal flow, not a wiring schematic

An SGP30 Arduino integration needs a stable measurement schedule as well as correct wiring. Begin with a maintained driver and a nonblocking loop, then make initialization, conditioning and data validity visible before interpreting air-quality trends.

Inspect the carrier regulator, logic translation and pull-up rail with power disconnected. The bare sensor is a 1.8 V design. Check host pin tolerance and supply capacity for the full module, and do not power heated gas-sensing circuitry from an ordinary GPIO output.

Identify and initialize the device

The documented seven-bit address is 0x58. Read supported identity or feature-set information through the driver and check initialization results. Send the IAQ initialization sequence only when entering a new measurement session, not automatically before every sample.

Maintain the required one-second cadence

Schedule IAQ measurement commands at regular one-second intervals as the datasheet specifies. Keep display refresh, network retries and serial output from blocking that schedule. If timing is disrupted or the device resets, record the interruption and re-establish the documented measurement state rather than pretending the session was continuous.

Validate the response before publishing units

Each processed signal is returned with its own checksum. Reject short or invalid transfers and preserve the distinction between CO2eq in ppm and TVOC in ppb. Do not relabel the first value simply CO2, average a transfer error into the trend, or show cached data with a new timestamp.

Restore only an appropriate saved baseline

Follow the manufacturer’s baseline guidance and the driver’s API ordering. Baseline values belong to the sensor and algorithm state that produced them; do not copy an internet example’s constants or swap fields because getter and setter argument order looks similar. Save only at appropriate documented intervals, with identity and age information.

Supply correctly converted humidity data

Use a suitable external humidity and temperature sensor to calculate absolute humidity in the required units. Check whether the API expects g/m³, a scaled integer or the sensor’s fixed-point encoding. A reset disables the humidity-compensation setting, so explicitly restore the intended policy after reinitialization.

Test faults without generating fumes

Log normal indoor air, status and successful acquisition time. Use a deliberate wrong address in software to verify unavailable-data handling, then restore normal operation. Do not test with fuel, smoke or concentrated solvent vapour. The prototype is a trend logger and not a certified life-safety alarm.

Frequently asked questions

Should I restart IAQ initialization on every loop?

No. That repeatedly restarts algorithm state instead of maintaining the required measurement session.

Can I reuse another module’s saved baseline?

Do not assume so. Preserve sensor identity and follow the manufacturer’s conditions for saving and restoring baseline state.
