TMP102 Arduino: 7 Extended-Mode and One-Shot Checks

TMP102: signed temperature formats — conceptual signal flow, not a wiring schematic

A TMP102 Arduino logger can display sensible-looking errors if it ignores the extended-mode bit. Start with a known configuration, validate every transfer and retain the raw register word while checking the library conversion against the documented format.

Identify supply, ground and bus pins using the carrier schematic. The sensor itself is limited to a low-voltage supply, so check regulation and pull-up rails independently. Keep wiring short for the first test and disconnect power before changing any address connection.

Initialize at the strapped address

Use the documented address option implemented by the module and require a successful driver initialization. Treat a failed scan as a wiring or configuration problem, not evidence of an extreme temperature. Keep initialization failure visible rather than allowing the display routine to print an old default.

Read back the operating format

Choose normal or extended mode explicitly and confirm the configuration register reflects it. Also record shutdown state and conversion rate. A copied code example may configure one mode during startup and later decode values as if the other remained active.

Decode the signed field before scaling

The temperature transfer is most-significant byte first. In normal mode, extract and sign-extend the twelve-bit field after shifting by four; extended mode uses thirteen bits after shifting by three. Then apply 0.0625 degrees per count. Reject short transfers instead of combining a new byte with a stale one.

Handle one-shot timing intentionally

For a shutdown-based one-shot workflow, issue the documented trigger and wait using the driver’s completion convention and specified timing. A request is not a completed observation. Distinguish trigger time, successful acquisition time and any timeout so the application does not label an old register value as new.

Test alert mode without a power load

If thresholds are needed, encode them for the active temperature format and verify hysteresis, polarity and comparator or interrupt behaviour. Monitor the logic output only during initial testing. Do not connect a heater, fan motor or mains circuit directly to a sensor alert pin.

Validate recovery and plausible observations

Log raw word, decoded temperature, mode and last-success time at a rate consistent with acquisition. Use an incorrect address in software to exercise the failure path, then restore it. A stable room reading and graceful recovery demonstrate integration behaviour, not traceable calibration or certified protection.

Frequently asked questions

Why can a mode change shift the reported temperature?

Normal and extended formats align the signed field differently; verify the decode path and configuration together.

Should zero indicate a timeout?

No. Zero degrees can be valid; keep an error state separate from a successful temperature.
